One-step vs two-step prop firm challenges
What an evaluation step means
A step is an evaluation phase with its own profit target. A one-step challenge has a single evaluation before the funded account. A two-step challenge requires both phases. Reaching a target does not override loss limits or minimum trading days.
The step count does not tell you how much risk room you have. Drawdown is the loss allowance that determines your account's floor. A static floor stays fixed; a trailing floor rises as the account grows. A daily loss limit separately restricts losses within a trading day.
Challenges are paid evaluations on simulated accounts. Most traders do not pass, and the fee is usually lost when they fail. Funded accounts are also simulated at most firms. The listed account size is not money you own or can withdraw.

How one-step challenges work
A one-step program has a single evaluation target, but its floor and daily loss rules can vary. We read the official firm pages in October 2026. Confirm the current configuration before paying.
Topstep Trading Combine Standard Path lists a 50K account at $49 per month, as listed in October 2026. Its target is $3,000, with a $2,000 maximum loss limit. The floor rises with your highest end-of-day balance, never falls, and locks at the starting balance. The daily loss limit is optional during the Combine, and there is no minimum time requirement to pass. The pages we read do not state a completion deadline.
Tradeify Growth lists a 25K evaluation at $99 one-time, as listed in October 2026. You need $1,500 profit while respecting a $1,000 end-of-day trailing drawdown. Its $600 daily loss limit is a soft breach: hitting it stops trading for the day without failing the account. You can pass in 1 trading day, with no completion deadline while the account stays active and within drawdown.
Breakout 1-Step Classic lists a 5K account at $45 one-time, as listed in October 2026. It requires 10% profit, permits 6% static maximum drawdown and has a 3% maximum daily loss. There are no minimum trading days or time limits. Its overall floor does not rise when you make profits.
Topstep charges monthly; Tradeify Growth and Breakout Classic list one-time fees. A trailing floor can reduce your room to give back accumulated profits, while a static floor remains fixed.
How two-step challenges work
A two-step challenge requires a target in each phase before the funded stage. The second target may be lower, but it remains another evaluation. Do not treat the targets as a single continuous profit requirement.
FTMO Challenge: 2-Step lists a 10K account at €89 one-time, as listed in October 2026. Phase 1 requires 10% profit and Phase 2 requires 5%. It has a 5% maximum daily loss and a 10% static maximum loss, both based on initial simulated capital. It lists at least 4 trading days and no time limit.
FundedNext Stellar 2-Step lists a 6K account at $59.99 one-time, as listed in October 2026. Its targets are 8% in Phase 1 and 5% in Phase 2. The daily loss limit is 5%, the static maximum loss is 10%, and the listed minimum trading requirement is 5 days. The pages we read do not state a completion time limit.
The5ers High Stakes requires 8% followed by 5%, with a 10% static overall loss limit. Reaching its 5% daily loss limit terminates the account immediately. Each step requires 3 profitable days, each earning at least 0.5% of the initial balance from closed positions. Time is unlimited provided the account remains active within any 30-day window. Fees were not listed on the pages we read.
Two-step does not always mean more loss room. FundingPips 2 Step Pro requires 6% profit in each phase and permits 6% static maximum loss. Its daily loss limit is 3% of the higher opening balance or equity. It has no minimum trading days per phase and no time limit.
Compare targets, floors and listed fees
Comparisons within the same firm show what changes when you remove a phase. Neither format is always cheaper or easier. Compare the program, account size and payment structure.
FTMO permits 10% maximum loss in both models, but changes the floor. Its 1-Step model trails at end of day and restricts daily losses to 3%. Its 2-Step model uses a static floor and permits 5% daily loss. Both have no time limit. The pages we read do not state the 1-Step fee, so a fee comparison is unavailable.
FundedNext Stellar 1-Step requires 10% profit, with a 3% daily loss limit, 6% maximum loss and 2 trading days. Stellar 2-Step requires 8% followed by 5%, with a 5% daily loss limit, 10% static maximum loss and 5 trading days. The pages we read do not state the Stellar 1-Step fee or drawdown type.
These fees cover different account sizes and currencies, so they are not a like-for-like ranking. Comparing a monthly fee with a one-time fee also requires knowing how long you will use the evaluation.
- Topstep Standard Path, one-step, 50K: $49 per month as listed in October 2026; $3,000 target; $2,000 trailing maximum loss that locks at the starting balance.
- Tradeify Growth, one-step, 25K: $99 one-time as listed in October 2026; $1,500 target; $1,000 end-of-day trailing drawdown.
- Breakout Classic, one-step, 5K: $45 one-time as listed in October 2026; 10% target; 6% static maximum drawdown.
- FTMO 2-Step, 10K: €89 one-time as listed in October 2026; 10% then 5% targets; 10% static maximum loss.
- FundedNext Stellar 2-Step, 6K: $59.99 one-time as listed in October 2026; 8% then 5% targets; 10% static maximum loss.
Three-step and instant accounts
The5ers Bootcamp adds another evaluation phase. Each step requires 6% profit and permits 5% maximum loss. There are no minimum evaluation days, and time is unlimited. The 20K program lists a $22 fee, as listed in October 2026. Evaluation balances progress through $5,000, $10,000 and $15,000 before the $20,000 funded stage. A 3% daily pause applies only after funding.
Instant accounts skip the evaluation, not the trading rules. Tradeify Lightning Funded lists a 25K account at $219, as listed in October 2026, with no evaluation required and end-of-day trailing drawdown. FundedNext Stellar Instant has no profit target, daily loss limit or minimum trading days. Its 6% maximum loss trails the highest recorded balance until capped at the initial balance.
Instant access does not mean an immediate payout. LucidDirect's 25K account has an initial payout profit goal of $1,500 and later goals of $1,250, plus at least 10 trading days for payout eligibility. Compare payout requirements as well as evaluation rules before choosing.
Choose by the rule your strategy needs
Match your trading pattern to the target, floor and breach consequence before comparing fees. Removing a phase can leave a tighter daily loss limit or moving floor. A paid simulated challenge can still end with a failed account and lost fee.
- If you want fewer phases, FTMO 1-Step removes Verification but keeps a 10% target and tightens daily loss to 3%. FTMO 2-Step adds a 5% second target but permits 5% daily loss and uses a static floor.
- If you need more overall loss room, FundedNext Stellar 2-Step permits 10% maximum loss versus Stellar 1-Step's 6%. It adds another phase and a listed 5-day minimum rather than 2 days.
- If your strategy gives back profits, check the floor. Breakout Classic and FTMO 2-Step use static floors; Topstep Standard raises its floor with end-of-day gains until it locks.
- If a daily stop should pause rather than terminate your account, Tradeify Growth's $600 limit on 25K is a soft breach. The5ers High Stakes terminates the account when its 5% daily limit is reached.
- If you trade infrequently, Tradeify Growth has no completion deadline while active and within drawdown. Apex Intraday Evaluation gives you 30 calendar days with no extensions, despite having no minimum trading days.
- If you rely on few profitable sessions, check what counts as a day. The5ers High Stakes requires 3 profitable days per step, each earning at least 0.5% from closed positions. Simply placing a trade does not qualify.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between a one-step and two-step prop firm challenge?
A one-step challenge has a single evaluation phase before the funded account. A two-step challenge requires both phases, each with its own target. The step count does not tell you whether loss limits are static or trailing.
Are one-step prop firm challenges easier to pass?
Fewer phases do not necessarily mean looser rules. FTMO 1-Step has a 3% daily loss limit and end-of-day trailing maximum loss. FTMO 2-Step permits 5% daily loss and uses a static maximum loss floor.
Are two-step prop firm challenges cheaper?
The published fees do not establish a general price advantage for either format. They cover different account sizes, currencies and payment structures. FTMO's 1-Step fee was not listed on the pages we read, preventing a fee comparison with its 2-Step program.
Can you pass a one-step challenge in a day?
Tradeify Growth allows passing in 1 trading day if you meet the target and respect the rules. FundedNext Stellar 1-Step requires 2 trading days. A single phase does not automatically mean a single-day pass.
Does instant funding mean there are no profit requirements?
Instant accounts skip the evaluation, but payout requirements can remain. LucidDirect's 25K account requires a $1,500 initial payout profit goal and at least 10 trading days for eligibility. FundedNext Stellar Instant has no profit target but retains a 6% trailing maximum loss limit.
