Free prop firm challenges and free trials
A free trial lets you test the account
A free prop firm trial is a practice account, not the same thing as a paid evaluation. It lets you try the firm's platform and the conditions stated for that trial without paying a challenge fee. The trial may include a profit target and loss limits, or it may simply let you test the service.
The purpose differs by firm. FTMO's trial closely follows its paid Challenge rules but halves the profit target. FundedNext sets a profit target, minimum trading days and loss limits. City Traders Imperium says its trial exists to test the firm, not to evaluate you, so it has no profit target or rules to pass.
Do not treat the word “free” as a promise of a funded account or a payout. Check what completing the trial actually gives you before treating it as an alternative to a paid challenge. Our guide to how prop firms work explains the distinction between an evaluation and the account that may follow it.
What each firm's free trial includes
We read the official firm pages in October 2026. FTMO offers a 14-day demo trial, and you can create another after it ends. You can have only one active trial at a time, but you can delete that trial and start a new one. Its rules closely match the paid Challenge, except that the trial profit target is halved.
The published FTMO page details do not state the available trial account sizes or platforms. They also do not give the trial's exact daily loss or maximum loss figures. Check those details before practicing against assumed limits. Our FTMO firm page provides context for its paid Challenge.
FundedNext offers trial balances from $6,000 to $200,000. You need to reach a 5% profit target and trade on at least 3 days within the 14-day trial. The account is automatically disabled after 14 calendar days from your first trade, so the clock does not count only the days you trade.
FundedNext sets a 5% daily loss limit, which resets after midnight server time, and a 10% maximum loss limit. Its trial uses MT5, except for U.S. clients, who must use Match-Trader because MT5 is not available to them. Expert Advisors, or automated trading programs, are prohibited; users of them face restrictions on opening new trades. You can hold at most 30 open positions at once.
City Traders Imperium offers a free 14-day trial with a $100,000 demo account on MetaTrader 5 or Match-Trader. It has no profit targets, no rules to pass and no payouts. That makes it a platform and trading-conditions test rather than a rehearsal for meeting an evaluation target.
What completing a trial does not establish
FTMO explicitly says completing its free trial does not establish automatic eligibility for an FTMO Account. Reaching the reduced trial target therefore does not establish that you qualify for that account. The published page details do not state a trial payout entitlement.
City Traders Imperium explicitly excludes payouts. Its lack of profit targets and rules to pass also means there is no trial evaluation target to complete. The published page details do not state that using the trial grants a funded account.
For FundedNext, the published trial page details do not state whether completing the target grants a funded account or any payout. Do not infer either benefit from the 5% target. The stated deadline still applies: the account is disabled after 14 calendar days from the first trade.
Time limits also affect how much practice you get. FTMO allows a new trial after its 14-day period, while City Traders Imperium lists a 14-day trial. The published FundedNext and City Traders Imperium page details do not state renewal or repeat-trial terms.
The lowest listed paid evaluation fee
Among the paid evaluations published for this guide, E8 Markets E8 One has the lowest listed fee: $48 one-time for a 5K account, as listed in October 2026. It is a one-step evaluation. This is the lowest of these listed fees, not a claim about every plan available across prop firms.
FundedNext Stellar 2-Step lists a $59.99 one-time fee for a 6K account, as listed in October 2026. FTMO Challenge: 2-Step lists a €89 one-time fee for a 10K account, as listed in October 2026. Account sizes and evaluation structures differ, so a lower fee alone does not tell you which rules will suit your trading.
Use our cheapest prop firms comparison to compare paid routes rather than assuming a free trial replaces an evaluation. Paid challenges are evaluations on simulated accounts. Most traders do not pass, and the fee is usually lost when they fail. Funded accounts are also simulated at most firms.
Use the trial to test specific rules
Choose practice tasks that expose a mismatch between your trading and the trial's rules. A target alone is not enough: loss limits, platform access and trading restrictions can determine whether the account works for you.
- Practice FundedNext's 5% daily loss limit and identify midnight server time. The reset follows the server clock, not necessarily your local midnight.
- Track FundedNext's 10% maximum loss limit separately from its daily limit. The published details do not state the full calculation mechanics, so confirm those before assuming how the loss floor behaves.
- Record your first FundedNext trade date and your trading days. You need at least 3 trading days, but the account expires after 14 calendar days from the first trade.
- Check the platform you can actually use. FundedNext requires U.S. trial clients to use Match-Trader; City Traders Imperium lists MetaTrader 5 or Match-Trader. Our prop firm platforms guide provides platform context.
- Do not use Expert Advisors on FundedNext's trial. They are prohibited, and using them leads to restrictions on opening new trades.
- Keep FundedNext's open-position count at or below 30. This limit matters if your method opens many separate positions.
- Treat FTMO's halved trial target as practice, not proof that you can meet the paid Challenge target. Use City Traders Imperium's trial to test conditions rather than chase a nonexistent pass target.
Questions people ask

The published official page details identify free trials at FTMO, FundedNext and City Traders Imperium. Each has a 14-day trial, but their targets, restrictions and purposes differ.
Can you get a funded account by passing a free trial?

Can you withdraw profits from a free prop firm trial?
City Traders Imperium explicitly says its free trial has no payouts. The published FTMO and FundedNext page details do not state a trial payout entitlement, so do not assume trial profits are withdrawable.
